Biliana Velkova's work examines consumerist culture by exploring motifs of glamour, kitsch and brand names. She searches of ways to fit these references into her everyday reality by way of performances and social interventions.

By performing mundane tasks such as waiting for a Greyhound bus, getting a Sears family photograph, and shopping at the local mall, Velkova produces a distorting image of popular culture. The SuperSuburbanite heroine becomes the awkward centerpiece in the Wall Mart parking lot, as the additional family member is immortalized in the Sears Family Portrait. By getting a makeover at every beauty counter at the local mall, the conception of beauty becomes a mass produced commodity.

In more recent work, the artist presents a portrait of a consumer by documenting her own shopping habits. Velkova's shoe and bag collections are presented in glossy, large scale prints. The work investigates overconsumption and obsession with acquiring and collecting.

Velkova is also interested in directly including the audience in her performance work. In a recent body of work such as a series of marching band performances, she explores the act of celebration and the way it relates to the space of performance when taken out of context.
